Psychotherapy & trauma therapy

In my psychotherapeutic work, I follow a systemic approach, which is characterized by respect, impartiality, interest and appreciation of previous actions and life strategies. My approach is transparent, collaborative, active and empathic. As a systemic therapist, it is important to me to think about people within their relationships, as many stressful and disruptive patterns of experience and behavior only become understandable and make sense through consideration of the interaction of biological and psychological processes and their embedding within a social context. In order to find new perspectives in the current life situation and to create future solutions, people from the immediate environment can be invited to take part in the therapy sessions or be considered in therapeutic conversation.

I want to support people to leave overwhelming feelings of despair, sadness, fear, anger and jealousy behind them and thus to experience the (self) love, the connection with other people and the self-realization that they want in their life.

Through the establishment and therapeutic management of a specialized trauma clinic as head psychologist, I have worked intensively in this area (PTSD, complex PTSD, attachment trauma, dissociative disorders). When working with traumatizations and stressful memories, I have had very positive experiences with the EMDR method. Here, too, my application of this method is shaped by my systemic stance. In addition, I use methods from cognitive behavioral therapy, internal family systems / ego state approaches and others that I tailor to specific clients and assignments.

Couples & familiy therapy

According to scientific studies, couples wait an average of 6 years of feeling unhappy before seeking help. This is particularly unfortunate, as even well-functioning couples can often benefit noticeably from couples therapy in individual areas of their relationships. For families with children, of course 6 years represents an even more profound timeframe. I follow a systemic approach as well as emotion focused therapy (EFT) and I incorporate scientific findings from Dr. John Gottman and others to help couples and families defuse conflicted verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect and affection, loosen up stuck patterns of interaction, and create an increased feeling of empathy and understanding. Couples and families often already benefit significantly from only few sessions, as the engagement of everyone involved in the therapy process can create a strong dynamic in the sense of a positive spiral, both in and between the sessions.

Counseling & coaching

In contrast to psychotherapy, counseling and coaching are more about individual challenges, burdens or life issues than about deep, recurring patterns or mental disorders. Counseling can, for example, revolve around topics such as personal conflicts and relationship difficulties, self-confidence, assertiveness, bringing up children, dealing with an illness or other challenges or problems at university, school or in job training. With coaching, topics often relate to questions about conflicts with superiors or co-workers, professional decisions, work-life balance, personnel management, career planning and design or bullying. If you require any assistance or further explanation in English, please feel free to contact me.

Supervision

Supervision is the consideration and reflection of professional action and institutional structures. I offer supervision for psychotherapists, medical doctors, social workers, educators, teachers and other psychosocial professional groups. I also enjoy working with teams. In doing so, I follow a systemic approach that regards clients as experts of their own personalities and of their work. The goal is to make positive as well as problematic interactions, patterns and processes visible in order to enable clients to reinforce or change them according to their own assessment and their individual goals and preferences. Video conferences & teletherapy

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of video conferences in psychotherapy has become much more common. The legal regulations have significantly simplified the application of this technology to the therapy setting, there are special data-secure video conference providers, and scientific studies indicate a comparable effectiveness as with traditional psychotherapy. All my services can be realized via video conferences or alternating with on-site meetings. Often I can even offer more timely appointments online.

Languages / Sprachen / Talen

English

After a bilingual English-German high school education, my university studies were partly conducted in English and I spent a considerable time in the USA (a semester abroad as an undergrad at UCLA and a good 2 years in New York for research at Columbia University and therapy training at Ackerman Institute for the Family after my PhD). On top of that, the main language I speak to my spouse is English. I feel comfortable conducting therapy sessions in the English language and I have done so many times in New York as well as in Germany.

Nederlands
